FAITH AND WORKS -
FIVE CONSIDERATIONS-

FAITH AND WORKS
A Man may be decent, moral, upright and conscientious, and
yet be far from the holiness of God. A man may toil, and by the sweat
of his brow, produce an offering just as Cain did in Genesis chapter 4.
He may read, pray, and hear sermons, and yet be still
under sin's penalty - waiting for DEATH AND JUDGMENT.
IT IS LIKE WHEN I SIT IN A CHAIR.
Sitting in a chair,
a person has to believe
that chair
is going to hold
that person
securely
safely
and
intact.
THE CHAIR
HAS TO BE
TRUSTED.
I have seen someone
sit in a chair
and
it
fell
underneath him.
it did
not
hold him up.
It failed.
YOU MAY ASK YOURSELF
THESE FIVE QUESTIONS
Question 1.
CAN WORKS SAVE?
Acts 13.38b,39
Through this man is preached unto you
the forgiveness of sins: and by him all
that believe are justified from all things,
from which you could not be justified by
the law of Moses.
Romans 3.20
Therefore by the deeds of the law there
shall be no flesh justified in his sight: for
by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans 3.27
Where is boasting then? It is excluded.
By what law? of works? Nay: but by
the law of faith.
Ephesians 2.8,9
For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves: it is the gift
of God: Not of works, lest any man should
boast.
WHAT IS SAVING FAITH?
TO HAVE SAVING FAITH
is to
* Believe the record that God gave of His Son.
I John 5.10 - 12
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself; He that believeth not God hath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of His Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. He that hath the Son hath life, and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
*Believing with the heart
Romans 10. 9 - 11
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord
Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.
And he brought him forth abroad, and said,
Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be
able to number them: and he said unto him,
so shall thy seed be.
*Taking God at his word, as Abraham did.
Genesis 15. 6
And he believed in the LORD, and he
counted it to him for righteousness.
And he believed in the LORD, and he
counted it to him for righteousness.
*Believing God's Promise, as Abraham did.
Galatians 3.5,6
He therefore that ministereth to you the Spirit,
and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by
the works of the law, or
by the hearing of faith?
Even as Abraham believed God,
and it was accounted to him
for righteousness.
and worketh miracles among you, doeth he it by
the works of the law, or
by the hearing of faith?
Even as Abraham believed God,
and it was accounted to him
for righteousness.
*Trusting after he heard.
Ephesians 1.13
In whom you also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise which is the earnest of your redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of His glory.
ABRAHAM'S EXAMPLE FOR US
Hebrews 11. 8 - 13
8. By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, he obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.
9. By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles (tents) with Isaac and Jacob,
the heirs with him of the promise.
10. For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.
11. Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.
12. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the seashore innumerable.
13. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Abraham was persuaded, mind convinced.
Abraham embraced God's Word, his heart captivated.
QUESTION 3.
WHAT DOES SAVING FAITH DO?
Luke 8.46 - 48
And Jesus said, Somebody hath touched me: for I perceive that virtue is gone out of me. And when the woman saw that she was not hid, she came trembling, and falling down before him, she declared unto him before all the people for what cause she had touched him, and how she was healed immediately. And he said unto her, Daughter, be of good comfort: thy faith hath made thee whole; go in peace.
Abraham was in a foreign land,
living in tents, with much people, much good,
and no child. God gave him a promise
of Sarah to have a child, and even
named the child ISAAC. His name
means "laughter". Everytime his name was called, they would remember the J O Y of having this little boy.
John 5.24
Verily, Verily, I say you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Acts 15. 8, 9
(Peter, addressing the apostles and elders)
And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as He did unto us, and put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.
Galatians 5.6
In Christ Jesus neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
Ephesians 2.8,9
For by grace are ye saved through faith;
and that not of yourselves,
it is the gift of God,
not of works, lest any man should boast
Hebrews 10.39
Now the just shall live by faith: but if any
draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
QUESTION 4
DOES SAVING FAITH MEAN
"LIVING AS YOU PLEASE?"
Titus 2.11 - 14
The grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men,
teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world, Looking
for that blessed hope and glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people.
[peculiar = a people for his very own possession]
Romans 8.13, 14
For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.
I John 5.14,15
And this is the confidence that we have in him,
that, if we ask anything according to his will,
he heareth us; and if we know that
he heareth us, whatsoever we ask, we know that
we have the petitions that we desired of him.
QUESTION 5
WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF
GOOD WORKS?
Matthew 16.27
For the Son of man shall come in the glory of his Father with his angels; and then he shall reward ever man according to his works.
Colossians 3. 22 - 24
Servants, obey in all things your masters
according to the flesh; not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but in singleness of heart, fearing God: and whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ.
Revelation 22.12
And, behold, I come quickly, and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.
